My interview with Debbie Millman, founder โDesign Mattersโ
Since Iโve moved to Brooklyn, getting up to the Guggenheim on 95th Street hasnโt been a top priority. But when my friend Julia said, โHeyโ the Alex Katz exhibit is closing, letโs go. I said, โsure.โโ She was on a hair trigger, finger poised above the โrefreshโ button at 11:55am until the โPay What You Wantโ tickets came available at noon.
The Guggenheim had been sending me weekly emails on the artist, so I was aware of the artist.
It wasnโt until GOT to the museum, that I understood his magnanimity of his work. Most artists fill maybe one floor of the six story corkscrew style galleries of the Museum. Katz filled the entire damn thing. He was that prolific of an artist.
Hereโs the part that left me gobsmacked. Known for his large scale paintings of American life, the artist destroyed 1000 paintings, before he discovered his style. Could you imagine destroying 1000 of anything before you went to market?
In this day and age of fast fashion, same day delivery, and buying goods on the metaverse, probably not.
