As I ready to host my event tomorrow afternoon, someone asked me, โJoya, you have built a big community hosting events. What makes a successful event?โ
Tip #1.
If I bail on an event, 90% of the time, its because I donโt know who will be in the room and if it will be worth my time. To head off both of these factors at my own events, I not only publish a 360 profile of each person attending ahead of time, I also share a challenge each is seeking support around. Now โ โ she is not only attending for her own success, but she is leveraging her own expertise to add to someone elseโs success.
Iโve never had last minute dropouts in the 10 years Iโve been hosting events.
I have Indian parents who showed up 3 hours late to everything. Today, as a product of the television industry where 3 seconds is considered โlate,โ I am a strict observer of time at my events. When it starts. When it ends. To me, it shows, โI respect your time. You respect mine.
Senior women leaders with full fledged teams are not having the same conversations as a solopreneur just starting a business. I curate the attendee list and ensure each is at the same professional level. With 10 attendees, that gap can become even more pronounced. Another reason to curate the room (and this is new for me), is to protect my own energy. After 10 years of hosting events, there is always that one person who is a drain. And they show their cards early. They arenโt prepared. They are late. They didnโt read the 14 emails with the address. My commitment as the event host, is to vet them ahead of time.
