I was interviewed on a podcast the other day, and the question I was asked is “What inspires me?” My list.
- Travel. Travel. Travel. As an entrepreneur, I’m forever multi-tasking. When I travel, I only have to focus on getting up and exploring the beautiful country I am in. The time away from work gives my brain time to mull issues I’ve been wrestling with, and most importantly, the space to come with creative solutions for those problems.
- Exercise. I work out 6 days a week. Some of my friends think it’s a bit too much. But there is a reason for my 5:30am waking time and 6am rigorous workout. Not everyday as an entrepreneur is a ‘win.’ But, if I made it through boxing, or SoulCycle or CrossFit, I’ve already won the day. I also wake up, worrying about this issue or that issue related to work. A rigorous workout changes my state. More positive Joya.
- Doing work I love. I left my full time job as a TV Anchor to run my women’s initiative full-time. Journalism and writing will always be my first love. But, it became apparent that LadyDrinks was the bigger brand. I needed to commit to wholly or not at all. Last week, I profiled one of my members in the weekly newsletter and on Linkedin. She wrote to say it was the lucky charm that kicked off a ton of media coverage in the NYTimes, TimeOut, Good Morning America. “I’m so grateful for the support and mentorship that LadyDrinks provides me!” That is everything.
- Routine inspires me. Every Sunday I sit down and look at my week, write what I did well last week, and what things I need to accomplish this week. It sets the tone for the next five days and allows me to anticipate getting things BEFORE it’s too late. This Saturday, I’m on a flight to Cartagena. Since I live between my own and my boyfriend’s home, I had to make a list of summer clothing I need to get from my own apartment. I needed to plan when I would be uptown (Tuesday night), and when my book proposal needs to be in to my editor. I had some questions, so I scheduled a call with her for Monday.
