What makes us Smart and Sexy?

Today is National Smart & Sexy® Day and I share my 7 tips to American jobseekers on what it takes to do a confident interview

Sponsored by @smartandsexysocial and Curvy Couture, it’s a day open to a national audience (mostly women) who are seeking to re-enter the job force. @acdnonline

I’m speaking at 2pm on what makes us #smartandsexy events inspire women — boosting their self-confidence so that they feel assured, confident and, most of all, employable.

7 tips I’m sharing today:

  1. I believe in the power of reflection. We all fail. But the important piece is to retain the learning. Football players do this all the time. After a game, win or lose, the team analyzes, what worked, what didn’t? Get a journal. Write it down. This way, you can apply the learning the next time you are in the field or at a job interview.
  2. Journal. Every day, we are experiencing mini-traumas or someone says something not-so-nice. Write it down. Get it out of your body. Its not doing anybody any good to keep all of it inside. Release it. Put it down on paper if you feel bad about something.
  3. Write down your goals. Where are you at 11am, March 10th, 2023. Write it down. Write what you are wearing. Who are you with? Are you in the job you dreamed of? Be specific. There is tremendous power in writing it down. Go one step further and make a board with images of what you want. Look at it everyday. Your brain does something really special when you do. It starts to notice people, objects, opportunities around you that help make it happen.
  4. Take agency over the job interview process. So many of us are so glad to be invited to the table, we forget that we have agency over the process. When applying to a position, talk to women and men who already have the job. Learn what the salary range is. Come ready with 3 bullet points as to why you are the person for the job. Come ready to tell 3 stories of how you demonstrated leadership in the past. Eye contact is key
  5. Habits. I’m a big believer in habits. I’m a bigger believer in establishing systems and processes to make those habits successful. I want to improve the way I eat and put more vegetables in my diet. The system I established is to grocery shop on Sundays. Cut everything up. Put them into Tupperware containers. Put it in the fridge. This way, all week, long, all I have to do is assemble the salad. No excuses at lunchtime that “I didn’t have time to eat healthy.”
  6. Confidence. Confidence is like a muscle. You have to exercise it often in order to build it. Think about what you loved to do as a kid. I used to love paint by numbers. Maybe you like to play the piano. Go do that for 10 minutes. Just doing that and watch your energy change. I also believe in doing something out side of your comfort zone once a week. Do that ond watch your energy change.
  7. Connect. You might think, I don’t know anybody. Everyone in this room today needs something. Can you connect two women you know everyday as a habit. Two women who could benefit from knowing one another. It will have a boomerang effect. You may be surprised what opportunities open up for you
